The Porte d'Amont (Upstream Gate) is the smallest and the third arch of Étretat. Maupassant described it as an elephant's head plunging its trunk into the water in his novel Une Vie (A life) in 1883. The cape on which it is pierced forms a 393 ft (120 m) long overhang and culminates 127 ft (39 m) above sea level. It is the longest cape in the Pays de Caux and a haven for seabirds such as black-legged kittiwakes, peregrine falcons, fulmar petrels, and great cormorants. They brood on the peaks or in the crevices of the cliffs.
