Since its inauguration in 1889, the Eiffel Tower has housed a veritable laboratory and has become the site of scientific experiments. Gustave Eiffel, who was passionate about science, had 72 names of famous scientists inscribed on the perimeter of the first floor. He immediately set up a meteorological station, worked on the rotation of the earth and wind resistance and offered the army an ideal place to develop radio communications. The engineer carried out his experiments, often at his own expense, but in this way he ensured the durability of his tower. He obtained an additional 70-year concession.
