Despite its unusual appearance, Puy de Sancy is indeed a volcano. It even constitutes a stratovolcano, or composite volcano, made up of numerous strata of hardened lava and tephras (tuff and volcanic ashes) corresponding to successive eruption phases. Its recent volcanic edifices, rich in silica and particularly viscous, have cooled and solidified without spreading, hence the sharp shapes that can still be observed today.
