The secular Mutte Tower

0
The council of Metz erected the Tower of the Mutte against the southern facade of Saint Stephen Cathedral in 1381. The lack of space had the most sacred site of the city give refuge to a laic tool. A bell weighing 2,425 lbs (11 tons) was installed for civil purposes rather than religious. It used to gather the inhabitants on the square or give the alarm. The Mutte was decorated with pinnacles in Gothic style for the sake of the facade's homogeneity. The tower had not rung since the end of World War One until its bell was replaced in 2015.
