Marseille has long been considered the oldest city in France before losing its title to Béziers in the Hérault department. Following recent archaeological excavations carried out in the center of the city erected on a promontory, two defensive ditches and a cistern dating from 625 BC were discovered there. Such an event relegated Marseille, built by the Greeks in 600 BC, to the second rank nationwide.
