Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral, commonly known as La Major, is the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Marseille. Built in neo-Byzantine style between 1852 and 1893, it is one of the few cathedrals erected in France in the 19th century, with those of Gap and Belley. It occupies the site of the former 12th-century cathedral on an esplanade connecting the Old Port and the port of La Joliette redesigned by Bruno Fortier thanks to the Art-Patrimoine 2013-2020 Endowment Fund set up by the city of Marseille to embellish its monuments.
