The Sammara squirrelfish (Neoniphon sammara) belongs to the soldierfish family. It is recognizable to its spotted golden coat surmounted by a large preopercular spine and its forked caudal fin. Viewed from the front, it has wide eyes well adapted to its nocturnal activity. It mainly lives in branched corals where it hunts small fish and invertebrates such as crabs.
