The sacrifice of US rangers

The cliffs of the Pointe du Hoc mark an iconic location of Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944. Since 1979, a war memorial has served as a reminder of the sacrifice of 225 rangers who resisted here for three days, 90 of whom survived. In 1974, it was visited by President Reagan for the 40th anniversary of D-Day, and Bill Clinton celebrated the 50th one. German Blockhaus and numerous bomb craters are still visible in the area, and old bombshells buried at the foot of the cliffs were destroyed as recently as 2015.
