In 1889, the bishop of Nancy, Charles-François Turinaz, undertook to erect the Sacred Heart Basilica in Nancy. Canon Henri Blaise supervised the work, whose first stone was blessed on June 9, 1902. A massive copper dome topples the monument rising to 147t ft (45 m) in height. Sitting atop it is an imposing statue 13 ft high (4 m) and weighing 7,054 lbs (3.2 tons). Today the basilica is the seat of Charles de Foucauld's parish and houses the Sacred Heart private high school.
