The men of the Magdalenian (last phase of the Upper European Paleolithic) decided to establish themselves in the Cave of Niaux and left imprints there. In the site, today accessible to discovery, visitors advance equipped with a lamp. No artificial lighting illuminates the interior, and for the duration of the visit of approximately 1h45, they progress by the light of portable lamps to the Salon Noir. The vast rotunda, which constitutes the highlight of the visit, comprises an impressive vaulted ceiling and is home to more than 70 paintings of animals.
