The restauration and redecoration of the Fontfroide abbey

Following the departure of the monks from the Abbey of Fontfroide, the monument was acquired by Gustave Fayet and Madeleine d'Andoque in 1908. They then began to restore and redecorate the place by adding fountains, statues, and other decorative elements. These ornamentations draw the abbey away from its typically austere Cistercian look. It now seems like a real castle with its main courtyard, its Italian-style terraced gardens, and its colored stained-glass windows created entirely by Richard de Burghstal.
