The resistance in 1814

The facades of the pillars of the Arc de Triomphe are decorated with sculptures made between 1833 and 1836. Facing the Champs-Elysées, there is “Le Triomphe de Napoléon” by Jean-Pierre Cortot and “Le Départ des volontaires en 1792”, sculpted by François Rude. Facing the Avenue de la Grande-Armée, the two high reliefs, “La Paix” and “La Résistance”, are by Antoine Etex. On the right-hand pillar (photo), “La Résistance” recalls the resistance of Parisians during the occupation by Russian and Austrian armies in 1814. In 2010, the architect Etienne Poncelet was commissioned to restore the sculptures, which had been badly damaged by pollution.
