The half-timbered houses inherited from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance participate in the reputation of the city of Troyes, in the Champagne region. Its inhabitants have lived in fear of fires for centuries. The history of Troyes was indeed punctuated by devastating fire episodes that provoked numerous destructions, including many of the medieval homes. From the 1950s, the municipality of Troyes and the inhabitants started to restore the half-timbered houses.
