Hardwoods constitute up to 22% of the forest of Ribeauvillé, near Riquewihr. During autumn, they give the canopy its signature colors. These woods are home to trees considered remarkable either by their age or their height. Some oaks are 8 ft large (2.40 m) in diameter. Ribeauvillé's forest also has a 187 ft high (57 m) sequoia and a 196 ft (60 m) Douglas fir. The ONF (National Forestry Office) has undertaken to identify the remarkable trees as part of a vast rescue plan designed to preserve them.
