The doors of fortified cities are designed with particular care to allow both passage in times of peace and control, or even closure, of the accesses in the event of an enemy attack. The Cité Vauban of Briançon has several, of diverse architecture. Among them, three are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list under the Fortifications of Vauban: Porte de Pignerol that closes the top of the town, Porte Dauphine (photo) of classic design with a false drawbridge and ashlar decoration, and Porte d'Embrun that grants access to the lower part of Briançon.
