The recent development of Al Wakrah

The recent history of the coastal city of Al Wakrah, south of Doha, has been marked by the opening, in December 2014, of the Al Wakrah Souq or Al Wakrah Heritage Village (a seaside neighbourhood entirely rebuilt according to traditional Qatari architecture) and the inauguration, in May 2019, of the Al Janoub stadium, built to host matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The city is linked to Doha by a 9.3 miles (15 km) long expressway, which has been completed in 2020. Also accessible by the Red Line of the Doha metro, Al Wakrah has become a suburb easily accessible from the capital. In the centre of the South Souq roundabout stands the “Pearl Monument” which represents two stylized shells. Built in the 1980s, the monument reflects the city’s pearl diving past.
