The Queyras Regional Nature Park was created on January 31, 1977. It extends to the northeast of the Hautes-Alpes department over an area of 151,905 acres (61,474 ha) located between the Queyras massif, the Escreins massif and the cottian Alps. It brings together the eleven municipalities of Arvieux, Abriès, Aiguilles, Ceillac, Château-Ville-Vieille, Eygliers, Guillestre, Molines-en-Queyras, Ristolas, Saint-Véran, and Vars. They range from 3,280 ft (1,000 m) in Guillestre to 6,692 ft (2,040 m) in Saint-Véran and represent a total population of 5,513 inhabitants.
