Below the ramparts of Saint-Paul-de-Vence is the Puy plateau, the initial nucleus of the Saint-Paulian habitat in the 11th century. It houses the current cemetery of the town, listed as a Historical Monument. Almost at its entrance is the tomb of Marc Chagall, who lived in the village from 1966 to 1985 and composed numerous paintings there. They depict lovers, goats, and roosters floating above Saint-Paul-de-Vence and its ramparts in huge bouquets of flowers. Not far away lie Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, at the origin of the eponymous foundation.
