The Mont Sainte-Odile is dedicated to Odile of Alsace, a little girl born blind who miraculously recovered sight. The devotion there has not failed since her canonization in the 11th century. She was proclaimed patron saint of Alsace by Pope Pius XII in 1946. During the First World War, the French translation of a Latin text known as the prophecy of Saint Odile was published, announcing the fall of Germany. It helped galvanize the French troops and experienced a resurgence in popularity during World War II.
