Saint-André Catholic church of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise belongs to the parish of Sainte-Marie-des-Lacs-et-des-Couzes of the archdiocese of Clermont-Ferrand. In winter, the church houses the statue of Notre-Dame de Vassivière, a black Virgin with her child on her lap. In early summer, the statue is carried in a procession to the chapel of Vassivière, 4.3 miles (7 km) from Besse. Notre-Dame de Vassivière is brought back down to the valley during the ‘Dévalade’ festival in September on the first Sunday after St Matthew's Day.
