In the Lot department in France, near the town of Cabrerets, is the Pech-Merle cave. The ornate prehistoric cave opens into a hill (pech in Occitan) which overlooks several surrounding valleys. The cave is large and stretches for nearly 1.24 miles (2 km), including almost 4 000 feet (1,200 m) of galleries and rooms, some accessible to visitors. The cave opens to the public in 1926 and is classified Historical Monument in 1952.
