Located on the Place du Palais de Justice in the Old Nice, the prefecture palace (foreground) today constitutes the residence of the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes department. The building served as the palace of the Dukes of Savoy in the 17th century and as a hospital during the French Revolution. It started housing the prefecture in 1860 after Nice was attached to France. Behind it appear the glazed-tiled dome of Sainte-Reparate Cathedral and the modern architecture of Nice's national theater.
