In the 19th century, when the practice of 'Arca' was banned, many Corsicans bypassed the unpopular cemetery burial - considered as an abandonment by God - by building outdoor monuments whose wealth reflected the social class of the deceased. These tombs, assimilated to true mausoleums, affirmed the power of the great lineages and made the lands on which they were built inalienable.
