The polar bear, emblem of the Arctic
2
0
Because of its white fur, the polar bear gets a perfect camouflage in the frozen arctic environment. Unlike other mammals of this area, its coat does not darken in summer. In fact, its hairs are not white: they are unpigmented, translucent and hollow. Light reflection on the inner surface makes them appear white. However, its fur sometimes ranges in color from lightly yellowish next to the dazzling whiteness of its environment: this color is due to the sunlight process of oxidation or to the absorption of violet and ultraviolet rays.
