Created in 1763, the Place de la Concorde, 360 metres long and 210 metres wide, is the largest square in Paris. It is located on the right bank in the 8th arrondissement, at the bottom of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, which it links to the Tuileries Gardens. Chosen by the Directoire to mark the reconciliation of the French after the excesses of the Terror, its name has changed greatly with the instability of France’s political regimes. The square was in turn called Place Louis-XV, Place de la Révolution, Place de la Concorde, Place Louis-XVI, Place de la Charte, before regaining its actual name under the July Monarchy in 1830.
