Located in the park of the Château de Versailles, the Pièce d’Eau des Suisses was dug on the site of a swampy area between 1679 and 1682. Intended to embellish the southern perspective of the château, the pond made it possible to drain the southern area of the gardens, which was known for its humidity and stagnant water. A titanic project carried out by a regiment of Swiss Guards who gave their name to the basin. With an average depth of 1.70 metres, the 682-metre long and 234-metre wide pool covers an area of thirteen hectares, in the extension of the Orangery. The pool is bordered by a double avenue of 200-year-old plane trees.
