The 'peketete' and its vegetation

In Nengone, the Kanak language of Maré Island, 'peketete' refers to the exposed fossil coral shredded in lace by the waves surf and spray which notably constitutes the coral terraces of Shabadran Bay, in the south of the island. Sharp, hostile, regularly covered with water, it is almost completely bare except for a few stunted 'idraro' (Pemphis acidula). These shrubs of the Lythraceae family naturally present on tropical shores can grow in the protected holes of the terraces.
