The patronymic evolution of Brégançon
0
0
The etymology of the word Brégançon comes from the Ligurian term briga, meaning high place and by extension fortress, as high locations were often chosen to house defensive structures. The rocky islet of Brégançon, established near the Var shore, was of predominant interest at the time due to its topography and location. Its name subsequently spread to the territory facing it on the mainland and evolved over the centuries from Pergantium to Brégançon via Briganconia, Briganson, Braganson, Berganson, and Bréganson.
