The origins of Percheron

0
The Percheron is a horse originating from Perche, a region that includes part of the Orne, Eure-et-Loire, and Sarthe departments. It was originally an Arab stallion that absorbed the local breeds (Augeron, Nivernais trait, Maine trait) and thickened over time under the effect of his draft work and the climate. The Percheron was used from the Middle Ages for agricultural work, the army, and transport and practically ceased to work in the fields with the Marshall plan and the advent of tractors in the 1950s. Today the breed is used for leisure and competition carriages, equestrian tourism, urban works, etc.
