The origins of Marseille soap
0
0
Marseille soap would find its origin in the Aleppo soap of Syria spread across the Mediterranean basin after the Crusades. Marseille has had artisanal soap factories since the 13th century, when Crescas Davin became the first official soap maker of the city. They used olive oil extracted in Provence and soda from the ashes of the Camargue salicornia. The first industrial factory was founded in 1593, and by 1660 Marseille had seven factories that produced nearly 20,000 tons of green soap annually. Under King Louis XIV, Marseille soap became a common name.
