The 'Organeau' gate

The town of Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department is surrounded by impressive ramparts built between 1272 and 1300 and 5,249 feet-long (1,600 meters). These ramparts were added by King Louis IX to transform the city of Aigues-Mortes into this fortified city to protect its port. Their construction was commissioned by Louis IX, but it was not completed until 30 years later, under the reign of his grandson, Philippe le Bel. Among the 10 gates on the ramparts, the ‘Organeau’ Gate is named after the ring to which sailors tied their moorings. The trace of the ring that gave the door its name can still be seen there today.
