The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the only flamingo species present in Europe. It is one of the six species of the Phoenicopteridae family, which includes all the flamingos on the planet, along with the James flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi), the Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus), the Caribbean flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), the Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis), and the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor). Greater flamingos are present in Camargue in colonies of hundreds to thousands of individuals.
