The oldest geological part of Martinique

The Savane des Pétrifications (Savannah of Petrifications) on the Sainte-Anne peninsula, at the southern end of Martinique, is with the Caravelle peninsula the oldest geological part of the island. These two original parts, over 21 million years old and formed by hydrothermalized lava flows, hyaloclastites, and reef limestones, have been linked over the centuries by successive volcanic eruptions until forming present-day Martinique. Over time and erosion, the ancient volcanic landforms of the 8,604-acre (3,482 ha) peninsula have softened to offer a hilly landscape interspersed with vast and flat areas that constitute a rarity in Martinique. The low relief of this area is dominated by a few hills that culminate at 328 or 656 ft (100 or 200 m). The rainfall there is relatively low, while the constant and significant sunshine is tempered by trade winds.
