The oldest and largest nature park in France (1977), the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne (Auvergne Volcanic Park) is committed to a sustainable development approach. Its volcanic heritage is a well-controlled source of tourism and Auvergne traditions (gastronomy, mountain pastures). The northern part of the park displays an alignment of 80 young volcanoes between 100,000 and 6,000 years old. Near the Mont-Dore resort, the Puy de Sancy lends itself to downhill skiing in winter. Many lakes such as Chambon, Guery, and Montcyrène were created by lava dams blocking rivers.
