The German firm Motorenfabrik Oberursel AG has been manufacturing automobile, locomotive and aircraft engines since 1898 in Oberursel near Frankfurt am Main. In 1913, it bought the licence for the French Rhône 9J engine and produced the 110 hp Oberursel UR.2 rotary star engine (photo). At the beginning of the Great War, the Fokker Dr.I and Fokker D.VI powered by the UR.2 engine wreaked havoc in aerial combat. From 1917 onwards, the low power of the UR.2 made it obsolete. Moreover, the lack of castor oil, essential to its operation, and the poor quality of its substitute reduced its reliability and longevity.
