The Notre-Dame collegiate church of Dole was heavily damaged during the siege of the city by the troops of the Prince of Condé from May to August 1636. Its initial bell tower, used as a watchtower, was the first target of the formidable cannon balls of the French artillery. The pillars of the collegiate church were hit and its bell tower was shaken. On August 8, 1636, a violent storm completed the destruction of the bell tower which collapsed a few days before the end of the siege, on August 15. In total, nearly 10,000 cannon balls and 500 bombs fell on the city, reaching in particular all the vaults of the collegiate church near the bell tower porch, but also those close to the chevet and the choir as well as six side chapels.
