The name Quartiers Nord (Northern districts) designates the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th arrondissements of Marseille that group together around one-third of its population, i.e some 250,000 inhabitants. Their heterogeneous architecture mixes old village cores and more or less degraded large complexes built in the mid-1960s. Known as very urbanized and popular and welcoming a large number of industries due to their proximity to the city's port facilities, the Northern districts still locally present a few rare wastelands and a few more affluent residential areas.
