Place du Général de Gaulle is the nerve center of Aix-en-Provence, where the past and the future of the city's urban development are articulated. Commonly called La Rotonde, from the name of its large central fountain, this 328-ft (100 m) in diameter square was created between 1840 and 1850. Its 39-feet high (12 m) two-basin fountain was added in 1860. Built in cold stone according to the plans of the engineers Tournadre and Sylvestre, it forms a road star with three statues representing Justice, Agriculture, and Fine Arts respectively oriented towards the Cours Mirabeau, Marseille, and Avignon.
