The architecture of the Grand Palais is reminiscent of the Crystal Palace in London, built for the first World Fair in 1851. At the end of the 19th century, natural light was still essential for major art exhibitions. The main body of the Grand Palais is 240 metres long. It is surmounted by a glass roof consisting of a transverse nave, or paddock, the main dome and lowered secondary naves. The steel structures were hot riveted. The design of the whole is due to the architect Henri Deglane (1855-1931).
