The nautical joust is an old maritime tradition with its codes, its vocabulary, its music and its rituals. The jousts in the town of Sète in the Hérault department were born with the creation of its port in 1666. For the practice of this sport coming from folklore and traditions, the jousters are perched on the 'tintaine' (an attached floor which must be at about 2m above the water) at the top of their boats. They are equipped with spears and bulwarks (a wooden shield that protects the chest) and are all dressed in white and wearing a boater. All jousters aspire to win the famous Saint-Louis trophy, the most prestigious of all jousting tournaments.
