The mysterious ice hair
During the winter, they appear on branches or on dead trees. Ice hair takes the form of fine hairs, about 0.02mm in diameter and up to 20cm in length. This enchanting natural phenomenon has long remained unexplained. A few years ago, a team of German scientists unraveled the mystery: Ice hair is the result of mycelium, a fungus found in bark, branches and dead wood. Photo credit: John Doyle
