Classified as a Historic Monument in 1840 on the initiative of the writer Prosper Mérimée and then listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the Arenas of Arles are today the most visited monument in the city with 255,600 spectators (2014) far ahead of the Roman Theater (122,100) and the Saint-Trophime Cloister (112,400). They are also home to many shows (bullfights, Camargue races, theater and musical performances). During the summer season, re-enactments of gladiator fights take place inside the arenas every week.
