With some 25,870 inhabitants (2019), Alençon is the most populated city in the Orne department in Normandy. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the town has attracted more people in need of greenery with the nearby Écouves forest. The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris should also attract visitors as the equestrian preparations are scheduled at the nearby Haras National du Pin.
