Forbidden from access and visit, the Saint-Michel islet is implanted in the municipality of Prunières in the Hautes-Alpes department. Rounded in shape, it extends over about 295 ft (90 m) in diameter, though its appearance changes with the seasons depending on the water level of Lac de Serre-Ponçon. During low-water periods, the islet is attached by a sandbank to the Roustourias peninsula, some 820 ft (250 m) away. Famous for its chapel, the Saint-Michel islet is the most photographed site of Lac de Serre-Ponçon.
