With its 201 miles (323.8km), the Durance is the most important river in Provence. It takes its source at 7,841 ft (2,390 m) above sea level in the municipality of Montgenèvre, near the Italian border, and flows into the Rhône a few kilometers southwest of Avignon. There, the Durance marks the border between the Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône departments.
