The Vieux Bassin (Old Basin) of Honfleur today forms a 426.5 ft (130 m) long port 229.6 ft (70 m) wide on one side and 278.8 ft (85 m) on the other. Built in 1681 in the very center of the Norman city to widen the old stranding harbor, it has become the most emblematic place of the town. At its end are La Lieutenance, the former home of the King's lieutenant, and the remains of the old ramparts surrounding the Porte de Caen (Caen Gate) that once marked the entrance to the fortified city.
