Described as the most beautiful wall of his kingdom by Louis XIV, the exterior facade or postscaenium of the Roman Theatre of Orange extends over 337 ft (103 m) long and rises 121 ft (37 m) high. It consists of three levels: a first made up of three doors opening onto the stage and of secondary doors opening onto the wings or adjoining rooms, a second level with no ornaments, and a third one decorated with a series of arches pierced with an orifice allowing light to pass through the internal circulation space of the 5.9 ft (1.80 m) thick wall. The stands built on the hillside can accommodate ten thousand spectators protected by a large toile (velum) in case of rainy or hot weather.
