In 1911, aviators Léon and Robert Morane joined forces with engineer Raymond Saulnier to found the Morane-Saulnier firm near Paris. The Morane-Saulnier type H sports monoplane was presented in 1912 at the Grand Palais Air Show in Paris. Its powerful engine and light weight made it very popular among pilots. In 1913, British pilot Gustav Hamel won the 2nd British Air Derby in a Type H. That same year, French aviator Roland Garros crossed the Mediterranean Sea between Fréjus and Bizerte (Tunisia), a non-stop flight of 435 miles (700 km), 310 miles (500 km) of which was over the sea, in his personal Morane-Saulnier.
