The miners' foundation

The influx of miners from Saxony in the 16th century transformed the techniques and the working organization at Saint-Jean Engelsbourg mine. They implemented a mining code and a miners' foundation. A contribution was due each week that represented 1/100th of the workers' salary. The money served the sick, invalids, widows, and orphans. It also financed the services of a teacher and a pastor. Although the last cobalt mine closed in 1976, the Miners' Foundation still exists today. Its members wear the traditional outfit of 19th-century miners.
