The military Molniya-1T satellite
The Soviet Molniya satellites followed an elliptical orbit 351-24,855 miles (550-40,000 km) from the Earth to provide complete coverage of the polar regions of the Soviet Union. While the Molniya-1 had a civilian telecommunications function for television, the Molniya-1T was exclusively for military use. Tests of the Molniya-1T began in 1972. From 1976 to 2004, 63 1T models equipped with a 40 W transponder were launched. Once in orbit, the Molniya-1T transmitted communications from ground, naval and air stations in Siberia and Asia.
